"I highly recommend taking the training course from Yellowknife Safety to operate powered industrial trucks or forklifts. Just learning the pre-shift operational checklist/performance evaluation steps alone can prevent equipment failure and also preserve the life of the heavy and expensive equipment.”

FAQ
Here are some answers to our most commonly asked questions.
No. Refresher training only needs to be conducted when operators are found to be operating unsafely, have been in an accident or near miss, receive a poor evaluation, or when there are changes in the workplace or type of truck. OSHA does, however, require an evaluation of each powered industrial truck operator’s performance at least once every three years.
No, not necessarily. But, you have to train on each “type” of truck. By “type,” OSHA is talking about basic differences — a sit-down rider truck vs. a stand-up truck, or an order-picker vs. a pallet jack. OSHA doesn’t require refresher training for operators of the same type of truck made by a different manufacturer. But, keep in mind that the operator will need proper instruction on differences in truck instructions, safety devices, etc.
ANSWER: Yes, the use of powered hand trucks presents numerous hazards to employees who operate them and those working in the area where they are used. Therefore, training is required for powered hand trucks. The OSHA regulation on 29 CFR 1910.178(a)(1) indicates that the requirements, including those for training, cover motorized hand trucks.
ANSWER: Yes, the requirement is 18 years of age.
The "evaluation" of "performance" required by the OSHA standard cannot be met by a written exam alone. A written exam by itself does not indicate whether the operator is operating the powered industrial truck safely. In most cases, the person conducting the evaluation would do two things: first, observe the powered industrial truck operator during normal operations to determine if the operator is performing safely, and second, ask pertinent questions to ensure that the truck operator has the knowledge or experience needed to operate a truck safely. Due to varying site-specific conditions, danger level, and complexity of the operation, the extent of the operator's need for additional skills must be assessed. To help achieve this, YCS provides you with a Safe Work Observation (SWO) form which is used as a proactive tool for routinely monitoring the operators' skill level. Once completed, forms can be saved to the employees'files.
Rough Terrain Forklifts
A Rough Terrain Forklift (a.k.a reach-lift) is a powerful mechanical device used to lift and move heavy objects and loads around the job site. They are very efficient and have unique abilities, making them the perfect go-to equipment. Operating them takes not only proper training but great skill too. If misused, a reach-lift can cause serious injury or fatality.
This course helps satisfy the operator training requirements under OSHA's Powered Industrial Trucks Standard (1926.602(d) in addition to standard 1910.178(l)) for General Industry. More specifically, it is designed to help students select a machine that is best suited for the job task, perform inspections and operate it over rough terrain while protecting themselves and their co-workers from the potential hazards associated with their use.
Describe the center-of-gravity and stability triangle concepts
Explain what to look for when performing a pre-use inspection
